Vijay Holds Another Meeting With Governor, Set To Demonstrate Majority In House

New Delhi:
Actor Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor R.V. Arlekar on Wednesday in another bid to convince him that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has the numbers to form a stable government following its decisive victory in last month’s Assembly election.

Sources indicate that Vijay intends to assure the governor that he is ready to demonstrate his party’s majority on the floor of the House. TVK has also retained legal options if the governor were to withhold approval for this second request to form the government.

The party is working to reach the majority mark of 118 seats, currently falling short by five, assuming the Congress honors its commitment to contribute five of its seats. There is speculation that smaller Tamil parties, preferred by Vijay for smoother coordination, may step in. The VCK, currently allied with the defeated DMK, has two seats, while the PMK, allied with the BJP, holds four.

Left parties CPI and CPIM, with four seats between them, have also been approached, with their decision expected later in the day.

If the VCK and Left parties extend support and the Congress remains committed, TVK will reach 119 seats—just above the majority threshold—paving the way for Governor Arlekar to invite Vijay to form the government.

An unexpected possibility is an alliance between TVK and AIADMK, though this seems increasingly unlikely despite rumors of some AIADMK members favoring Vijay. AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami has reportedly ruled out supporting his political rival.

Vijay was initially expected to take oath as Tamil Nadu’s next Chief Minister this afternoon, but the process was delayed after Governor Arlekar raised concerns regarding the majority of his as-yet unconfirmed administration.
